Most newcomers do not expect coyotes in the tropics. They are here, slim and sandy coloured, trotting along a fence line at dusk exactly as they would in Arizona.
Where you’ll see it
Cattle pasture, dry forest edges and the outskirts of towns, more inland toward Sardinal and Liberia than on the beach itself. At night you hear the yipping chorus start up somewhere in the dark.
What to know
Coyotes eat whatever is available: rodents, fruit, iguanas, carrion and, given the chance, a cat or a small dog left outside after dark. They are wary of people and not a danger to adults. Bring small pets in at night, do not leave pet food out, and keep the bins closed. That is the whole of the coyote protocol.
